The Blood: Life and Forgiveness
The Sacrifices: Pointing to Christ • ~7 min read
Welcome back to our study of God's dwelling place and the profound messages hidden within the ancient sanctuary. Last time, we began looking at the sacrifices, seeing how each element pointed to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Today, we delve into one of the most solemn and central aspects of the sacrificial system: the blood. From ancient times, blood has been understood as the very essence of life, and in the sanctuary, its shedding carried immense weight, representing life offered for sin. This act, though sometimes difficult to contemplate, powerfully foreshadowed the life-giving, forgiving power of Christ's own precious blood.
The Sacredness of Life in the Blood
In the Old Testament, God made it clear that life itself resided in the blood. This wasn't just a biological observation but a spiritual truth that underscored the gravity of sin and the cost of forgiveness. When an animal's life was taken as a sacrifice, its blood represented the life of the sinner being offered to God in exchange for their sin.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.
Leviticus 17:11
This verse reveals a foundational principle: blood was the means of atonement. To "make atonement" meant to cover, to reconcile, to bring back into harmony with God. The shedding of blood was not a casual act; it was a sacred transaction where a life was surrendered to cover the guilt of another. This constant reminder of the value of life and the seriousness of sin was meant to impress upon the people the holiness of God and their desperate need for a redeemer.
No Remission Without Blood
The principle established in Leviticus was echoed and amplified in the New Testament, confirming the absolute necessity of blood for the forgiveness of sins. The earthly sanctuary, with all its rituals and sacrifices, served as a powerful object lesson, a "shadow" pointing to a greater reality.
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Hebrews 9:22
Here, the inspired writer of Hebrews states unequivocally that forgiveness (remission) is impossible without the shedding of blood. This principle highlights the severity of sin, which demands nothing less than a life to atone for it. The animal sacrifices in the sanctuary system were imperfect, temporary solutions that had to be repeated continually. They could not truly take away sin, but they consistently pointed forward to the perfect sacrifice that would one day be offered.
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
Hebrews 10:4
These sacrifices served as a schoolmaster, teaching humanity about the ultimate cost of sin and preparing hearts to receive the true Lamb of God.
Christ's Blood: The Ultimate Atonement
The Old Testament sacrifices, with their shed blood, found their complete and glorious fulfillment in Jesus Christ. He is the perfect sacrifice, whose blood was shed once for all, providing eternal redemption and forgiveness.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Ephesians 1:7
Unlike the blood of animals, Christ's blood has infinite value because it is the blood of the sinless Son of God. His sacrifice was not merely a covering for sin but a complete removal of it, offering us true liberation and reconciliation with God. The apostle Peter emphasizes the preciousness of this sacrifice:
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1 Peter 1:18-19
This "precious blood" is the foundation of our hope, the source of our forgiveness, and the assurance of our salvation. It is perfect, sufficient, and eternally effective.
Life and Justification Through His Blood
Beyond forgiveness, Christ's blood brings us life—eternal life and a transformed life in the present. When we accept His sacrifice, we are not only forgiven but also declared righteous in God's sight, a process called justification. This is a gift made possible solely through His shed blood.
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Romans 5:9
To be "justified by his blood" means that because of what Jesus did on the cross, God looks at us as if we had never sinned. We are made right with Him. Furthermore, Jesus Himself spoke of His blood as essential for spiritual life:
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:53-54
This is not a literal command, but a profound spiritual truth. To "drink His blood" means to fully accept His sacrifice, to appropriate His life and death for ourselves, allowing His atoning work to become the very source of our spiritual existence. It is through this vital connection that we receive eternal life.
The Cleansing Power of Christ's Blood
The blood of Christ doesn't just forgive and justify; it also cleanses. It has the power to purify us from the defilement of sin, making us holy and acceptable to God. This cleansing is not a one-time event but a continuous process as we walk in fellowship with Him.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:7
What an incredible promise! His blood has the power to cleanse us from "all sin"—past, present, and future. It's a continuous, active cleansing that keeps us in fellowship with a holy God. The book of Revelation also speaks of this marvelous cleansing:
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Revelation 1:5
We are washed, made clean, through His love and His blood. This is the ultimate fulfillment of the sanctuary service where the blood was applied to cleanse and purify. Christ's blood provides a complete and perfect cleansing that truly makes us new creatures in Him.
Conclusion
The shedding of blood in the ancient sanctuary was a somber yet vital lesson, pointing to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It taught us that sin is deadly, demanding a life for atonement, and that without the shedding of blood, there is no remission. But thanks be to God, Jesus came! His precious blood, shed on Calvary, fulfills every type and shadow. It is the source of our redemption, the basis of our forgiveness, the means of our justification, and the power that cleanses us from all sin. Through His blood, we have access to life, peace, and eternal fellowship with our Creator.
