God's Dwelling with Humanity Forever
The Sanctuary and Future Hope • ~6 min read
Welcome back, dear friends, as we continue our journey into the profound truths of God's sanctuary message! We've explored the earthly sanctuary, seen its shadows pointing to Christ's ministry in the heavenly sanctuary, and understood its deep meaning for our salvation. Today, we arrive at the glorious climax of this message: God's ultimate desire to dwell personally with His redeemed people, forever. This is the grand culmination of His plan, a future hope that transforms our present reality.
God's Eternal Desire: To Dwell with Humanity
From the garden of Eden, where God walked and talked with Adam and Eve, to the wilderness tabernacle, and then the temple in Jerusalem, God has always expressed a deep desire to be present with His people. The sanctuary system, in all its forms, was a visible symbol of this divine presence. But the Bible reveals an even more glorious future, where God's dwelling with humanity will be direct, personal, and eternal, without any veil or separation.
And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
Revelation 21:3
What an incredible promise! This verse paints a breathtaking picture of the future. The very "tabernacle of God," His dwelling place, will be directly "with men." No longer will there be a need for a symbolic structure, for God Himself will be the direct, tangible presence among His people. He will not just visit; He will "dwell with them." This signifies an intimacy and closeness that surpasses anything we have known on this earth. We will be His people, and He will truly be our God, in the most complete sense imaginable.
No Temple Needed: God Is Our Sanctuary
In the new earth and the New Jerusalem, a remarkable detail is revealed about the absence of a physical temple. This isn't because God's presence is diminished, but quite the opposite – His presence is so pervasive and complete that a separate structure is no longer necessary.
And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it.
Revelation 21:22
And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.
Revelation 21:23
Imagine a city so filled with the divine presence that no temple building is required! The Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are themselves the temple. This means that God's presence will be everywhere, directly accessible, and all-encompassing. The very purpose of the earthly sanctuary was to teach us about God's presence, His character, and His plan of salvation. In the new earth, these lessons will be fully realized, and we will experience these truths directly, face to face.
Just as the sun and moon are no longer needed because the glory of God and the Lamb provide all the light, so too is a separate sanctuary building superseded by the direct, unmediated presence of God Himself. This is the ultimate fulfillment of God's desire to be with His people.
Life in God's Eternal Dwelling
What will this direct dwelling with God be like? The Bible gives us beautiful glimpses of this future:
-
Direct Fellowship: We will see Him face to face.
And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.
Revelation 22:4This is the ultimate intimacy, to behold the very face of our Creator and Redeemer.
-
No More Sorrow or Pain: The former things will be passed away.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Revelation 21:4In God's immediate presence, all the suffering and brokenness of this world will be gone forever.
-
Serving Him Directly: We will serve Him without hindrance.
And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
Revelation 22:3Our redeemed lives will be filled with joyful service and worship, in perfect harmony with God's will.
-
Complete Restoration: God's covenant promise fully realized.
For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land... And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.
Ezekiel 36:24, 28This ancient promise finds its ultimate, glorious fulfillment in the new earth, where God truly dwells with His people.
The Sanctuary Message: A Journey to Eternity
The entire sanctuary message, from its earthly types to its heavenly reality, has been guiding our hearts and minds toward this ultimate destination: a restored relationship with God, where He dwells among us in perfect harmony and love. It shows us God's relentless pursuit of His creation, His plan to cleanse sin, and His desire for intimate fellowship. The services of the sanctuary pointed to Christ's sacrifice and His priestly ministry, making it possible for us to stand redeemed before a holy God. And now, in the new earth, that redemption is complete, and the fellowship is direct and eternal.
Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.
Isaiah 12:2
This is the hope that sustains us, the promise that assures us, and the glorious future that awaits all who accept God's gracious plan of salvation.
Reflection Questions:
- How does the promise of God dwelling directly with humanity (Revelation 21:3) change your understanding of His character and His love for us?
- Considering that "the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple" (Revelation 21:22), what does this tell you about the nature of worship and fellowship in the new earth?
- What specific aspects of the descriptions of the new earth (e.g., no pain, seeing His face) are most meaningful to you personally?
- How does understanding this ultimate fulfillment of the sanctuary message strengthen your faith and hope today?
- In what ways can we begin to experience a deeper sense of God's dwelling with us, even now, as we await His glorious return?
Conclusion
The sanctuary message culminates in the most beautiful truth of all: God's eternal dwelling with His redeemed people on the new earth. The earthly sanctuary was a shadow, the heavenly sanctuary is the reality of Christ's present ministry, but the ultimate fulfillment is a world where God Himself is our temple, our light, and our constant companion. All barriers between God and humanity will be removed, and we will experience perfect, unhindered fellowship with our Creator and Redeemer forever. What a glorious hope!
