The Journey Home: Born Again into a New Family
Have you ever wished you could start over? We all carry the weight of our past—the mistakes we have made, the habits that bind us, and the patterns of life that seem impossible to break. Yet, the heart of the Gospel is the promise of a complete transformation. It is not merely about turning over a new leaf; it is about receiving a new life. When we come to God, He does not just offer us a set of rules to follow; He offers us a place in His family. Today, we explore what it means to be born again and how this spiritual rebirth grants us an entirely new identity as children of the Most High.
A Supernatural Beginning
Religion is often viewed as a human effort to reach toward God, but the Bible teaches that salvation is God reaching down to us. When Nicodemus, a learned religious leader, came to Jesus by night, he was met with a truth that transcended all his theological training. He needed a fundamental change that only God could perform.
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again." John 3:3-7
To be "born again" is to experience a radical shift in our spiritual nature. Just as our physical birth brought us into a physical family with its own DNA and history, the new birth brings us into God’s family. It is a work of the Holy Spirit that cleanses our hearts and replaces our old, selfish desires with a new hunger for His will. It is the point where the past loses its power to define our future.
A Brand New Identity
Once we have been born of the Spirit, we are no longer defined by our previous failures or the labels the world has placed upon us. The Bible declares that our past has been buried and a new chapter has begun. This is not a gradual improvement; it is a creative act of God.
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." 2 Corinthians 5:17
When we are "in Christ," we take on the characteristics of His family. We are no longer strangers or foreigners to God’s grace. As we read in Romans 6:4, "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." This newness is our inheritance, provided by the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf.
The Right to be Called Children
The most beautiful aspect of this rebirth is the relationship it restores. We move from being lost wanderers to being recognized as beloved children. This status is not earned through our own merit; it is a gift of grace received through faith.
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name." John 1:12
This "power" or authority to be called children of God is the bedrock of our security. It changes how we view ourselves and how we interact with the world. Because we are His children, we have access to the Father at all times. As Galatians 4:6-7 reminds us, "And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."
Walking in the Light of Our New Family
Living as a child of God means we have a new home and a new purpose. We no longer look back with regret, but forward with anticipation. The Bible encourages us to embrace this identity daily:
- We are loved: "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." 1 John 3:1
- We are cleansed: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1:9
- We are transformed: "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Romans 12:2
- We are kept: "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come... shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39
Reflection Questions
- How does the concept of being "born again" change your perspective on your past mistakes?
- What does it mean to you personally to be called a "child of God" rather than just a "servant"?
- In what areas of your life do you feel the need for the Holy Spirit to create "all things new"?
- How does knowing you are part of God’s family change the way you interact with others?
Summary
The journey home begins with a surrender of our old life and a willingness to be born again by the Spirit of God. Through this rebirth, we are granted a fresh start, a new identity, and the legal right to be called children of God. No matter where we have been or what we have done, the door to God’s family is open. By accepting Jesus, we step out of the shadows of the past and into the light of our new life as His beloved heirs. You are not just a creation of God; through Christ, you are His child.
